An estimated 20 million people in the UK have leant money to their friends and family at some point, with only half of them getting the debt repaid.
Figures from the AA show that around 60% of people have handed out cash to people they know, with the average amount being leant in excess of £600.
Household bills and deposits on houses are said to be the biggest reasons peopl go cap in hand to their friends and family.
